PYEONCHANG, March 16, 2016 - The International Olympic Committee (IOC)’s Coordination Commission for the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 wrapped up its sixth visit confident that PyeongChang 2018 is moving in the right direction as Games preparations intensify in the final two years.
At a closing news conference with PyeongChang 2018 Organising Committee President Yang-ho Cho, Coordination Commission Chair Gunilla Lindberg expressed satisfaction with construction progress at competition venues and congratulated Games organisers for the success of early test events.
The first round of recent test events — the Alpine World Cup, the Snowboard World Cup and the Freestyle Ski World Cup — won praise from athletes and positive reviews technical experts. The number of events and the workload for PyeongChang 2018 will soon increase dramatically, with 24 test events set for next winter sports season.
The first test event, the ISU World Cup Short Track Speed Skating, is scheduled for December at the new Gangneung Ice Arena.

Ms. Lindberg said, “There is still a lot of work to do, but PyeongChang 2018 is on track to deliver great Olympic Winter Games for Korea and the world. We are pleased with what we have seen and heard during our visit.”

POCOG President Cho said, “This Coordination Commission meeting has been a very productive few days for all of us, sharing constructive feedback and expertise. As we move into the critical operational phase of the Games, I would like to thank the IOC and international federations for the continued guidance and support.The strong partnership that we share is instrumental to our success.”
He added, “As we have seen with our first test events, our continued cooperation is essential to hosting a Great Games. With our close cooperation, we will ensure a great Olympics and Paralympics in 2018.”
The Coordination Commission’s three-day visit (14-16 March) included a series of venue visits and discussions with POCOG on all aspects of Games preparations, including the athlete experience, legacy planning, sustainability and transport, as well as plans for the Paralympic Games.
Aware that the Rio 2016 Games are fast approaching, POCOG presented its plan to establish the PyeongChang House in Rio de Janeiro during the Games. The facility will showcase winter sports and PyeongChang’s Games preparations.
The visit confirmed that construction on the Ice Arena and other competition venues remains on schedule. The Coordination Commission also noted the strong and growing commercial support for the Games.
Before leaving PyeongChang, the commission chair joined a signing ceremony for the newest Pyeongchang 2018 partner, Lotte, a leading lifestyle company whose business areas include food, retail, hospitality, entertainment and construction. With the signing, PyeongChang has reached nearly 70 percent of its sponsorship goals.

평창 동계 올림픽 제6차 IOC 조정위원회, 강릉에서 폐막
평창동계올림픽의 준비 상황을 점검하는 제6차 국제올림픽위원회(IOC) 조정위원회가 분야별 성과를 확인한 뒤 16일 폐회했다.
2018평창동계올림픽 및 장애인동계올림픽대회 조직위원회(위원장 조양호)는 16일 “강원도 강릉에서 지난 14일부터 개최된 제6차 IOC 조정위원회가 경기장 투어와 본 회의, 수송과 숙박, 선수단 서비스 등 워킹 그룹별 미팅에 이어 이날 기자회견을 끝으로 사흘 동안의 일정을 모두 마무리했다”고 밝혔다.
IOC 조정위원들은 이번 조정위원회를 마치며, 대회 개막을 2년여 앞둔 조직위원회가 성공적인 올림픽을 위해 바람직한 방향으로 앞으로 나아가고 있다고 평가했다.
구닐라 린드버그 IOC 조정위원장은 이날 기자회견 자리에서 “조직위가 대한민국과 전 세계에 훌륭한 동계올림픽을 선보이기 위한 준비를 차질 없이 진행하고 있는 것을 확인했다”면서 조정위원회 기간 동안 보고 받고 논의된 대회 준비 과정에 대해 만족감을 드러냈다.
린그버그 위원장은 또 “아이스아레나를 비롯한 신설 경기장들의 공정이 계획대로 진행되고 있고, 후원사 유치 역시 눈에 띄게 증가하고 있다”면서 “앞으로 할 일이 많이 남아있지만, 이 또한 잘 진행될 것으로 기대한다”고 덧붙였다.
특히, 지난 2월 치러진 테스트이벤트를 성공적으로 치러낸 것을 축하했고, 오는 12월 국제빙상연맹(ISU) 쇼트 트랙 월드컵 대회를 비롯해 내년까지 남은 테스트 이벤트도 잘 준비해 줄 것을 주문했다.
조직위 조양호 위원장은 “이번 제6차 조정위원회는 대회 준비를 위한 건설적인 논의와 전문성을 공유할 수 있는 매우 생산적인 시간이었다”면서 “IOC와 국제연맹들의 지속적인 지원에 감사드린다”고 말했다.
조 위원장은 특히 “대회 준비가 운영단계로 넘어가면서 조직위와 IOC, 국제연맹간의 이 같은 유기적인 파트너 십은 평창 동계올림픽 성공개최의 중요한 열쇠인 만큼, 더욱 긴밀한 협조를 통해 대한민국은 물론 전 세계가 주목하는 올림픽으로 치러 낼 것”이라고 강조했다.
한편, 제7차 IOC 조정위원회는 오는 10월 평창 알펜시아 리조트에서 개최될 예정이다.
