나는 소인이로소이다.
I’m a Small person
사람을 대인, 중인, 소인으로 나누어 볼 수 있습니다.
소인은 내 입장에서만 생각하는 사람입니다.
나와 생각이 다른 사람을 보면서
‘저 사람 생각이 틀린 데 왜 벌을 받지 않는가’이런 생각까지도 합니다.
We can divide people into Small, Middle, and Great.
A Small person sees the world from his point of view.
When he looks at those with a different perspective he even says,
“He is wrong. Why isn’t he being punished for thinking that way?”
내 기준에서 볼 때는 내가 옳은 것이지만 상대방의 기준에서 볼 때는 상대방이 옳은 것입니다.
내 입장에서 내 잣대로만 상대방을 보는 사람은 소인입니다.
스스로 돌아보아서 그렇다면 ‘나는 소인이로소이다’라고 생각하면 됩니다.
You’re always right when you examine form your point of view,
but when seen from the other’s perspective, he’s right too.
One who thinks their viewpoint is the only one is a Small person.
Look at yourself, and if this is your case, just say, “I’m a Small person.”
중인은 타인의 입장에서 보는 사람입니다.
‘저 사람은 왜 저럴까’ 생각이 들면 한번 자리를 바꿔봅니다.
그리고 ‘아, 이래서 그렇구나, 그럴 만하다’하고 이해합니다.
The Middle person observes from the other’s viewpoint.
When he thinks, “Why does that person act like that?”
he places himself in his shoes and understands;
“Ah, that’s why. That makes sense.”
아무리 인색한 사람이라 할지라도 그럴만한 이유가 있습니다.
어려서부터 사랑이든 물질이든 뭔가 시원하게 받지 못했으면
남에게 줄 줄도 모릅니다.
No matter how stingy he acts, it makes sense why he’d act that way.
If he had not been loved when he was young,
if hadn’t experienced material comforts,
he would not know how to get along with people.
악한 사람을 보면 악할 수밖에 없는 사정이 있습니다.
환경이 그랬기 때문에, 환경을 이길 만큼 본인의 의지가 굳지 못했기 때문에,
교육을 받지 못했기 때문에 등등 이유가 다 있습니다.
When you see a wicked person, there’s a reason why he could not be otherwise.
Because the circumstance makes the man
and he didn’t have the willpower to overcome his environment,
or he didn’t have a proper education, etc. Many reasons exist.
어떤 사람이라도 그럴 수밖에 없는 불가피한 사정이 다 있는 것입니다.
타인의 입장이 되어 보면 이해 못할 일이 없습니다.
그러면 중인, 즉 보통 사람은 되는 것입니다.
Everyone has this kind of situation showing why there’s no other way
but to be that way. If you look from another’s viewpoint,
there’s no way but to understand another.
In this case you are a Middle person, that is, a common person.
