중용이란
The middle way
동물은 한 가지의 특성만 가지고 있습니다.
여우는 여우의 특성만을, 뱀은 뱀의 특성만을 가집니다.
그런데 인간에게는 두 가지 마음이 공존합니다.
선한 마음과 악한 마음, 어떤 걸 하고 싶어하는 마음, 하기 싫어하는 마음,
이렇게 공존하는 것이 인간입니다.
Animals carry one distinction only.
A fox possesses one only, a snake possesses one only.
However, human beings co-exist with a mind at the same time.
Human co-exist with a good mind and an evil mind,
with a mind to want to do things and with a mind to dislike doing things.
그걸 인정해야 됩니다.
어떤 한 면만 과도하게 노출되고 다른 쪽은 표현이 안 되었을 뿐
자기 마음속에 다 가지고 있습니다.
그것이 인간의 본성입니다.
You have to accept this.
It’s just that you are predisposed to one side excessively
and have expressed only that side of yourself.
Everything exists deep within your mind.
That’s mankind’s ‘Bon-seung’ or Original Nature.
어느 쪽으로도 치우치지 않은 사고방식을 가질 때 중용이 됩니다.
중용을 잡기가 굉장히 어렵습니다.
성격적인 면에 있어서도 오욕칠정을 다 알면서 중심으로 가야 되고,
지식적인 면에 있어서도 어느 쪽으로 편중되지 않은 상태에서 여러 가지를 다 알 수 있어야 되고
받아들일 수 있어야 됩니다. 장단점을 인정하고 편견 없이 볼 수 있어야 됩니다.
Not being partial toward any one side is the middle way.
It’s extremely difficult to achieve. Even while dealing with your own personality,
you have to know all the Five Desires and Seven Emotions to obtain the middle way,
and even while you have your own personal knowledge,
you have to be able to know everything in many ways
without being prejudiced to one way, and you have to be able to accept everything.
You have to be able to see without bias and to acknowledge merits and faults.
지적으로도, 감정적으로도, 그리고 성격적으로도 치우치지 않아야 됩니다.
예를 들어 의지만 강해서 제어하지 못하는 면이 있으면 안 됩니다.
고루 갖춰야 합니다.
You should not be slanted to any one side in terms of knowledge,
emotions, or personality. For example, you have an aspect not to control
because only your will power is strong. You should possess everything generally.
